HGVs could be blocked from busy route as 'unrelenting stream' of large vehicles causes chaos for residents
Bridgwater Town Council plans to divert HGVs from residential roads after surge in large vehicle traffic.

Bridgwater Town Council has approved plans to reroute heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) away from residential roads in Somerset after residents reported an 'unrelenting stream' of large vehicles causing traffic chaos. The council voted unanimously on December 29, 2025, to implement a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) blocking HGVs weighing over 7.5 tonnes from using Victoria Road and adjacent residential streets between 7am-7pm daily. The move follows a 40% increase in HGV traffic through the area since 2020, with over 200 large vehicles recorded daily during peak hours. The council cited safety concerns, noise pollution, and road damage as key reasons for the restriction, which will remain in effect for 18 months while a permanent solution is developed.
