Heavy rain and melting snow could cause flooding in wake of Storm Goretti

Storm Goretti, which struck the UK last week, produced gusts of almost 100 mph and triggered a rare red warning in the South West. The Met Office now warns that rising temperatures, a rapid thaw and further rainfall could melt snow and cause flooding. As of Sunday evening, 12 flood alerts and eight flood warnings were active in Scotland (SEPA), with the greatest risk in Dumfries and Galloway and the west and north of Scotland. The Environment Agency issued four flood warnings and 85 alerts across England, while Natural Resources Wales listed six alerts. More than 12,000 homes lost power after the storm, and South East Water reported outages in 11 postcode areas. In November, up to 110 mm of rain could fall over parts of Skye, Lochaber, Argyll and the Trossachs, while north‑western Scotland faces a yellow wind warning until 8 am Monday.
