24‑year‑old Canadian soldier dies near Riga; investigation underway.

Canadian Army gunner Sebastian Halmagean, 24, died on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2026, near Riga, Latvia, during his first deployment with Operation Reassurance. A former resident of Hamilton, he was based at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base in Oromocto, New Brunswick, and had served the Canadian Armed Forces for three years. The Department of National Defence confirmed the death and said an investigation is underway, with no indication of a broader threat to other deployed troops. His father, Alin Halmagean, a mixed‑martial‑arts gym owner in Stoney Creek, expressed pride in his son’s service and hopes his story will inspire others to join the CAF. The incident follows Latvia’s NATO deterrence efforts amid regional tensions.
