Hackers target Iranian state TV as exiled crown prince tells military to 'join the people'

On 19 January 2026, hackers disrupted multiple channels of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, inserting footage of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. The prince called on the Iranian army to “join the people” as a mass internet blackout and a brutal crackdown intensified after protests began in early January. Iran’s Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that by the end of Sunday 8 January, 3,919 people had been killed, with 8,949 fatalities still under investigation, 2,109 severely injured and 24,669 detainees confirmed. An Iranian official claimed at least 5,000 deaths, including 500 security personnel. The broadcast highlighted the regime’s refusal to release information amid widespread repression.
