'Generational talent': Bob Bowman says Summer McIntosh can match Phelps
Bob Bowman affirms comparisons between Summer McIntosh and Michael Phelps are fair.

Legendary coach Bob Bowman, who guided Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic golds, says Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh is a “generational talent” comparable to Phelps. McIntosh, 18, relocated to Austin in May 2025 to train with Bowman’s pro team at the University of Texas. In February 2026 she broke a 17‑year‑old record in the 400‑m individual medley, posting 4:28.13 at the Pro Swim Series on the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The swimmer won four golds and a bronze at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore. Bowman outlines a plan for McIntosh to target five gold medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and to break the 200‑m butterfly record. She also balances her training with an accounting degree at Texas.
