FTSE 100 up over 21% in 2025, closing near record highs
Britain's FTSE 100 index closed 0.3% higher on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, ending the year just shy of its all-time high of 9,162.09 points set the previous day. The blue-chip index achieved a 21.3% gain for 2025, marking its strongest annual performance since 2009. The rise was driven by gains in energy stocks, with BP and Shell rising 0.7% and 0.6% respectively, following a 1.8% increase in Brent crude oil to $75.65 per barrel. The FTSE 100's performance outpaced the FTSE 250, which fell 0.2% to 23,250.89 points.
