The rise was driven by gains in energy stocks, with BP and Shell rising 0.7% and 0.6% respectively, following a 1.8% increase in Brent crude oil to $75.65 per barrel. The FTSE 100's performance outpaced the FTSE 250, which fell 0.2% to 23,250.89 points.
