FTSE 100 Breaks Historic 10,000 Points Mark for First Time
UK's flagship stock index hits symbolic milestone on first trading day of 2026.

The FTSE 100 reached a historic milestone on Friday, January 2, 2026, breaking the symbolic 10,000 points mark for the first time since its launch in 1984. The benchmark index hit the level within 30 minutes of trading opening, driven by gains in aerospace company Rolls-Royce Holdings and mining firm Fresnillo. This follows the FTSE 100's best year since 2009, during which it closed at all-time highs 41 times in 2025 and outperformed international rivals including the US S&P 500. Analysts attributed the surge to expectations of interest rate cuts, a weaker pound boosting competitiveness, and Chancellor Rachel Reeves' policies encouraging investment over cash savings. The index briefly retreated to 9,982 points later in the morning but maintained its record-breaking momentum.
