From Alberta to the Maritimes, Canada faces a wind‑chilled deep freeze this weekend

A polar vortex has slammed Canada with a wind‑chilled snap that began Friday, Jan 23, 2026. Wind chill values from –40 °C to a record –55 °C are projected across the Prairies, while Southern Ontario expects 20–30 cm of snow this Sunday. Yellow‑to‑orange alerts cover Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario. In Winnipeg, the cold halted school trips and stalled emergency crews, and the Windsor Park Nordic ski trails are closed until Monday. Thunder Bay’s Care Bus is running to warm stranded residents. Residents are advised to stock emergency kits for 72 h outages and keep vehicles ready with block heaters.
