French minister under fire for Playboy magazine cover
French minister Marlene Schiappa faces backlash for appearing on Playboy cover amid pension reform crisis.

French Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations Marlene Schiappa faced criticism from her own party after appearing on the front cover of Playboy magazine in April 2023. The 12-page interview focused on women’s and LGBT rights, but drew backlash during a period of political and social crisis in France over President Emmanuel Macron's controversial pension reforms. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne reportedly told Schiappa the cover was 'not appropriate, especially during this period.' Green Party politician Sandrine Rousseau and presidential candidate Jean Luc Mélenchon also criticized the move. Schiappa defended the appearance, stating it was about women's control over their bodies. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin supported her, calling her a 'woman of character.'
