Former Manitoba NDP MLA files defamation claim against Premier Kinew and 2 MLAs over Nygard association

Manitoba Independent MLA Mark Wasyliw has filed a defamation lawsuit against Premier Wab Kinew and two other NDP members, Seine River MLA Billie Cross and Keewatinook MLA Ian Bushie, over comments linking him to convicted sex offender Peter Nygard. The lawsuit, filed December 23, 2025, with Manitoba's Court of King's Bench, alleges Kinew's September 17, 2024, statement that Wasyliw 'can't be affiliated with the NDP and Peter Nygard' and Cross's remarks about supporting someone who might benefit from representing a sexual predator damaged his reputation. Wasyliw was removed from the NDP caucus in September 2024. The Fort Garry MLA is seeking damages and a published apology, claiming the comments were a 'misleading excuse' to oust him from the party. Kinew apologized to defense lawyers in October 2024. The case remains in its early stages with no defense filed yet.
