Ford Urges Carney to Keep China EV Tariffs

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to maintain Canada’s 100 % tariff on Chinese electric vehicles as he prepares to travel to China next week for trade talks. The tariffs were imposed in 2023 alongside U.S. President Joe Biden’s policy to protect Canada’s domestic auto industry. China retaliated with duties on canola, seafood and pork, prompting pressure from prairie premiers to lift the duties. Ford, a staunch supporter of Ontario’s auto sector, warned Carney that the tariffs should stay in place to safeguard local jobs and manufacturing. Carney’s visit will also cover energy, agriculture and national security issues amid strained Canada‑China relations since 2018.
