Ford Calls for Chinese EV Boycott After Carney Deal

On Jan. 21 2026, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a boycott of Chinese electric vehicles that are allowed back into Canada under a deal struck by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The agreement drops Canada’s 100‑per‑cent tariffs on Chinese EVs and permits an annual import quota of up to 49,000 vehicles, in exchange for China cutting its canola tariffs. Ford criticised the pact, claiming it hurts Ontario’s auto sector and that Chinese firms are unlikely to manufacture in Canada. He called on Canadians to support domestic manufacturers and urged the federal government to strengthen the home auto industry. The deal was reached during Carney’s visit to China, where he met President Xi Jinping.
