Finland PM Sanna Marin Concedes Defeat in Tight Parliamentary Election
Finland's popular left-wing Prime Minister Sanna Marin lost re-election to the right-wing National Coalition Party.

Finland's 37-year-old Prime Minister Sanna Marin conceded defeat on April 2, 2023, after the right-wing National Coalition Party won the country's parliamentary election. The National Coalition Party, led by Petteri Orpo, secured 48 seats compared to Marin's Social Democratic Party's 43 seats in Finland's 200-seat Parliament. Marin, who became the world's youngest serving prime minister at age 34 in 2019, had been favored in polls but lost amid voter concerns about economic issues and inflation. The election results marked a shift to the right in Finnish politics, with the National Coalition Party's victory attributed to voters' focus on economic management and concerns about rising prices. Marin's concession came after initial results showed her party trailing the opposition, ending her tenure as head of Finland's center-left coalition government.
