Piper James, a 19‑year‑old from Campbell River, B.C., was found dead on a beach at K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) in Queensland at 6:35 a.m. local time, Jan. 20 2026. Queensland Police said the body was surrounded by roughly ten dingoes and that markings on her body suggested interference. Police offer three scenarios: drowning while swimming, drowning after being chased by dingoes, or death by dingo attack. James, a former B.C. Wildfire Service member and aspiring pilot, had planned to earn her licence after returning. Global Affairs Canada is offering consular assistance. The family remains in Campbell River, awaiting a post‑mortem.
