Extreme flooding on Haida Gwaii as heavy rain triggers highway washouts and flood warnings

A 5.3-kilometre stretch of Highway 16 on Haida Gwaii was completely washed out on December 29, 2025, cutting off the critical north-south route on the archipelago northwest of Vancouver. The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued a flood watch for Haida Gwaii and the North Coast after 110 millimetres of rain fell in 48 hours, with some areas receiving up to 200mm. The Haida Nation reported "extreme flooding" and warned forest service roads were impassable. The Masset hospital ER was on diversion, operating only 8 a.m.-3 p.m. until January 4, 2026. Environment Canada issued yellow rainfall warnings as an atmospheric river brought persistent moderate-to-heavy rain to the region. A temporary structure is being planned for the washout, but no timeline was given for repairs.
