Ex-Councillor Sentenced 20 Weeks for Stalking Penny Mordaunt

On 16 January 2026, former Conservative councillor Edward Brandt was convicted at Southampton Crown Court and sentenced to 20 weeks in prison for stalking former Cabinet minister Dame Penny Mordaunt. Brandt, who had been elected in the South West, was found guilty of sending repeated aggressive messages and attempting to meet Mordaunt despite her lawyer’s instructions. The judge warned that his conduct threatened the former minister’s safety and in consequence imposed a custodial sentence. The case highlighted growing concerns over political harassment and the need for stronger protection for public officials.
