Enzo Maresca leaves position as Chelsea head coach
Italian manager departs after breakdown in relations with club hierarchy.

Enzo Maresca has left his position as Chelsea head coach, the Premier League club announced on Thursday 1 January 2026. The Italian manager's departure was expected following a breakdown in relations with key figures at Stamford Bridge. Maresca, 45, was appointed in June 2024 as successor to Mauricio Pochettino. During his 18-month tenure, he guided Chelsea to a fourth-placed Premier League finish, UEFA Conference League victory, and FIFA Club World Cup triumph. However, the team sits fifth in the league, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, with just one win in their last seven top-flight games. His contract was set to run until 2029. Chelsea's next match is away to Manchester City on Sunday, with nine fixtures across four competitions scheduled for January. Liam Rosenior has emerged as an early betting favorite to replace him.
