Energy bill warning as millions sink into a 'permanent crisis' - owing £1,800
Households owe average £1,800 in unpaid energy bills amid rising costs

A new report reveals that UK households turning to debt advisers for help with unpaid energy bills now owe an average of £1,800, with millions trapped in a 'permanent crisis' as energy prices continue to rise. The data, released on December 29, 2025, shows a sharp increase in energy debt, particularly affecting low-income families and pensioners. Debt charity StepChange reported a 34% year-on-year increase in energy debt cases, with some callers owing more than £5,000. The government's Energy Bill Support Scheme has been extended, but campaigners warn it’s insufficient, calling for more targeted support and energy efficiency upgrades for vulnerable households. Some households qualify for free or subsidised improvements to make their homes more energy efficient.
