Eight Skiers Killed in Austrian Avalanches

On Saturday, January 18, 2026, at least eight skiers died after avalanches struck Austrian mountain regions. In the Pusterwald area of Murtal district, Styria, three Czech nationals were killed. The Salzburg Pongau region, specifically the Gastein Valley south of Salzburg, saw four Austrian skiers buried, after a slide swept away seven people. A female skier in Bad Hofgastein, at about 2,200 m (7,200 ft), died 90 minutes earlier. Rescue teams, including four helicopters, mountain rescue and Red Cross dog teams, responded; two people were injured, one seriously, and one escaped unharmed. Authorities warned of “clear and repeated” avalanche risk earlier in the day.
