Durham Police Reassign Officers After Alleged Assault on Oshawa Lawyer
Oshawa lawyer claims Durham officers slammed her head and dragged her to courthouse cells; police watchdog says no serious injury, so no investigation.

Defense lawyer Sudine Riley alleges that on January 22, 2026, several Durham Regional Police Service officers violently slammed her head against a desk, struck her neck and back with their knees, and forced her into handcuffs before dragging her to the basement cells of the Oshawa courthouse. Riley’s lawyer, Neha Chugh, reported head bleeding and a swollen eye, but no fractures were documented. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) declined to investigate, stating its mandate covers only serious injuries or deaths. Durham police reassigned the officers to non‑courthouse duties while a separate trespass investigation proceeds.
