Durham Police Assault Claim: Lawyer Dragged to Oshawa Courthouse Cells
Sudine Riley alleges Durham police assaulted her on Jan 23, 2026, at Oshawa courthouse.

On Jan 23 2026, defence lawyer Sudine Riley was allegedly beaten by Durham Regional Police at the Oshawa courthouse. According to her lawyer, Neha Chugh, officers slammed Riley’s head on a desk, ripped a head scarf off, and hauled her in handcuffs to the basement cells. The incident left her with a bloody head and swollen eye. DRPS Sergeant Janalyn Dowdle confirmed the incident and opened an investigation. Advocacy group Women in Canadian Criminal Defence, led by Cassandra DeMelo, warned that lawyers feel unsafe. Canadian Association of Black Lawyers’ Theresa Donkor called for an independent inquiry. The case has prompted a broader debate over police conduct and courtroom safety.
