In a fatal incident that unfolded on 21 January 2026 at around 10 pm local time, a commuter train derailed near Gelida, on the outskirts of Barcelona, on the R4 line between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. A retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks, reportedly triggered by the week‑long heavy rainfall that had battered northeastern Spain. The derailment killed the train driver and left 37 passengers and crew injured, five of whom suffered serious wounds. Emergency response included 20 ambulances and 38 firefighter units, with casualties taken to hospitals in Mónes‑Broggi, Bellvitge and Vilafranca. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered condolences on X. The crash follows a September collision two days earlier that killed 42 people in southern Spain.
