'Don't bow to China': Protesters march against Chinese 'mega embassy' in London
Hundreds protested against China's planned mega embassy in London, with Kemi Badenoch urging the government to block the project.

On Saturday 17 January 2026, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the former Royal Mint court in London’s City, a key site between the City of London and Canary Wharf, to oppose the Chinese government’s proposed mega‑embassy. Conservative Secretary Kemi Badenoch led the opposition, pledging to fight for freedom and urging the government to stop the project before the planning decision on 20 January. Protesters, including MPs Danny Kruger (Reform), Bobby Dean (Lib Dem), and Sir Iain Duncan Smith (Conservative), called the embassy a “spy hub” and a threat to UK security. The embassy’s spokesperson dismissed concerns as “groundless,” while the Foreign Office said national security had been prioritized.
