Dingoes Culled After Piper James's Death on K'gari

In the early hours of Jan 24 2026, 19‑year‑old Canadian Piper James, from Campbell River, B.C., was found dead on a K'gari beach after an early‑morning swim. A pack of about ten dingoes had circled the body. Preliminary autopsy results showed drowning as the primary cause, with pre‑mortem bites present. Queensland officials announced Saturday that the dingoes were considered an "unacceptable public‑safety risk" and would be humanely euthanised. Environment Minister Andrew Powell said the decision was "the right call." The family has set a GoFundMe that has raised just over $20 000 and will bring her remains home next week. K'gari has closed two camping sites until Feb 28 and increased ranger patrols.
