Denmark Boosts Greenland Troops Amid Trump Threats
Denmark sends additional forces to Greenland as Trump asserts U.S. claims, prompting a rare NATO diplomatic standoff.

On Wednesday, Jan 15, 2026, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen met U.S. Vice‑President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, affirming Denmark’s determination not to allow U.S. control of Greenland. Earlier, Danish troops had participated in a joint exercise with Germany, France, Norway and Sweden in Kangerlussuaq on Sept. 17, 2025, signalling a stronger Arctic defence posture. Copenhagen announced a new deployment of Danish forces and equipment to Greenland, bolstered by allied troops, as a “tripwire” against any potential U.S. military action. Trump has repeatedly posted on Truth Social that Greenland is “necessary” for U.S. national security, inflaming tensions within NATO. The move marks a rare diplomatic standoff between a NATO ally and the U.S. president, raising debate over Arctic sovereignty and alliance cohesion.
