Defence Seeks No Jail Time for P.E.I. Infanticide Case

Cassie Marie Acorn, 40, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., pleaded guilty to infanticide after killing her 3‑month‑old daughter, Winter Elizabeth Rose Acorn, on March 16 2025. The infant died at IWK Health Centre in Halfiax after blunt‑force head trauma. Acorn was originally charged with first‑degree murder but, following a psychiatric assessment that found a disturbance of the mind, she pleaded to the lesser infanticide charge. Crown attorney John Diamond seeks a one‑year jail term, two years probation and mandatory counselling. Acorn’s lawyer argues for no jail, citing her postpartum depression, intellectual disability, PTSD and the traumatic circumstances. Judge Jeff Lantz will decide the sentence at the end of January 2026.
