Danish PM warns US ‘aggression’ over Greenland

On 9 January 2026, former Danish prime minister Helle Thorning‑Schmidt told Sky News that Denmark feels “bullied” by the United States over the semi‑autonomous island of Greenland. She described the US request to strengthen its presence in Greenland as an “act of aggression” that could undermine NATO and Denmark’s sovereignty. The comments come after President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in Greenland for national‑security reasons, and White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the acquisition is “actively discussed” by the president’s national‑security team. Thorning‑Schmidt warned that any hostile move would be disastrous for Denmark, NATO and even could play into the interests of Putin and Xi. The former PM was speaking on the “Electoral Dysfunction” podcast for Sky News.
