Church of England to curb flowers as net‑zero push
The Bishop of Dudley will spearhead a plan to slash the Church of England’s floral carbon footprint ahead of 2050 goals.

On 24 January 2026, the Church of England announced a sweeping crackdown on the use of flowers across its chapels and events to reduce its carbon emissions. The strategy, led by the Bishop of Dudley, aims to cut the sector’s greenhouse‑gas footprint as part of a broader net‑zero target by 2050. The bishop will convene clergy and lay leaders at upcoming synods to review sourcing, disposal and alternative decor practices. Stakeholders cited the floral industry’s contribution of roughly 1–2% of the Church’s energy use, highlighting the potential impact of this programme on the overall carbon balance.
