A Pentagon memo reveals China has readied over 100 DF-31 intercontinental ballistic missiles at multiple launch sites across the country. The DF-31 missiles have an estimated range of 6,800 miles (11,000 km), placing the entire UK and much of the US mainland within striking distance. The deployment comes amid heightened tensions with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. On December 29, 2025, China conducted live-fire drills firing missiles directly toward Taiwan's northeastern region, prompting the US to call for restraint. The DF-31 missiles use solid fuel and can be launched from mobile platforms, enhancing China's nuclear deterrent capabilities. The weapons are believed to be deployed at sites including Yumen in Gansu province, with China's nuclear arsenal estimated at 600 warheads and growing rapidly.
