China's military conducted live-fire drills around Taiwan, including rocket launches into surrounding waters.

China launched rockets into waters off Taiwan on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, during the second day of large-scale military exercises named 'Justice Mission 2025.' The Eastern Theatre Command of China's People's Liberation Army deployed amphibious assault ships, bomber aircraft, destroyers, frigates, fighters, and mobile PCH-191 rocket launchers around the self-ruled island. Live-firing drills occurred at five locations, with rockets fired into waters north and south of Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry reported 130 Chinese military aircraft and 22 navy and coastguard vessels operating near the island in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. local time. The drills, the largest by area and closest to Taiwan yet, come 11 days after the U.S. announced an $11.1 billion arms package to Taiwan. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te stated frontline troops were ready to defend the island, while Taipei sought to avoid escalation.
