Chile Wildfire Disaster: 16 Dead, 20,000 Evacuated

At least 16 people have died and almost 20,000 residents fled as Chile declared a state of catastrophe on 18 January 2026. Firefighters faced 24 blazes, mainly in Nuble and Bío Bío, about 500 km south of Santiago, while over 250 homes were lost. Roughly 33 sq mi of forest burned amid gale force winds and temperatures that peaked at 38°C (100°F). President Gabriel Boric announced the emergency on X, while Security Minister Luis Cordero confirmed 15 deaths in Bío Bío with an additional fatality reported in Nuble. Earlier that month, Argentina’s Patagonia suffered similar heat waves, underscoring the regional climate crisis. Emergency services are stretched thin, with 200 trucks deployed to tackle the fires.
