Carpenter Sentenced to 29½ Years for Wife’s Murder After Child’s Testimony
52‑year‑old Robert Rhodes gets 29½ years for killing estranged wife Dawn after a child's testimony reveals coerced plot.

Robert Rhodes, a 52‑year‑old carpenter from Withleigh, Devon, was convicted on 12 Dec 2025 in an Inner London Crown Court of murder after killing his estranged wife Dawn Rhodes in June 2016 at their home in Redhill, Surrey. The murder involved slitting her throat with a knife, leaving all neck structures severed. While acquitted at the Old Bailey in May 2017 on a self‑defence defence, new evidence surfaced in November 2021 when their child (under 10) testified that Rhodes had coerced the child into lying about the crime. The Court of Appeal quashed the acquittal in Nov 2024, allowing a retrial in Oct 2025. The jury found Rhodes guilty of murder, child cruelty, perverting the course of justice and two perjury charges, and he was sentenced to 29½ years. Judge Mrs Justice Ellenbogen described him as cowardice, wicked and callous.
