Carney’s China Visit Secures Energy Agreements, Tariffs Still Stalled

On Jan 15 2026 Prime Minister Mark Carney entered Beijing for a four‑day trade mission that yielded a memorandum of understanding on clean and conventional energy co‑operation signed by Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson. The MOU covers oil, gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and emission cuts but does not commit China to purchase more Canadian petroleum or LNG. Other agreements touched on pet food exports, tourism and joint crime‑fighting efforts. Carney’s visit marked the first official Canadian PM trip to China since 2017 and aims to ease years of trade friction, yet tariffs on pork, canola and seafood remain unresolved.
