Carney to Convene Ottawa Premier Summit
Prime Minister Mark Carney will host Ottawa premiers on Jan. 29, 2026, amid a surge in CUSMA negotiations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to convene Canada’s premiers in Ottawa on January 29, 2026, marking the start of a busy year as the mandatory review of the Canada‑U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) ramps up. The first‑ministers’ meeting will be preceded by a dinner the night before, according to insiders. The talks come after a year of virtual gatherings amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war, which has hit Canadian steel, aluminum and auto sectors. Trump’s trade representative, Jamieson Greer, outlined conditions for extending CUSMA beyond its 2036 expiry, citing dairy quotas and streaming‑law disputes. Carney’s Ottawa summit follows his recent trip to China to discuss trade, energy and security.
