Canadian Volunteer Survives Friendly Fire In Ukraine
David Rauser survived a headshot by a teammate while clearing a Russian bunker in Donetsk.

David Rauser, 40, former Alberta firefighter, joined Canada’s volunteer contingent in Ukraine in late 2024. In November 2025, he was shot twice by a new American teammate while clearing a Russian bunker in Donetsk’s eastern frontier, suffering a traumatic brain injury and missing part of his skull. Hospitalised first in Kyiv, then in two western Ukrainian facilities, Rauser spent nearly two months in intensive care and has been released 90 % recovered, though he requires a head‑plate surgery. With his contract set to last three years, he is now awaiting paperwork before possibly returning to Canada or taking up a trainer role. His saga underscores the growing Canadian participation, with over a dozen volunteers killed since the 2022 invasion.
