Canadian teen Summer McIntosh breaks 400m individual medley world record

Sixteen-year-old Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh set a new world record in the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:25.87 at the Canadian swimming trials on April 2, 2023, breaking Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszú's previous record of 4:26.36 set at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This achievement came just four days after McIntosh broke the 400m freestyle world record with a time of 3:56.08, surpassing Australian Ariarne Titmus' record of 3:56.40 set in May 2022. McIntosh, who trains with the Sarasota Sharks in Florida, previously won gold in the 200m butterfly and 400m medley at the 2022 World Championships and two golds at the Commonwealth Games. She made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 at age 14, finishing fourth in the 200m freestyle.
