Canadian Gunner Killed Near Riga Amid Largest Deployment

Canadian Armed Forces member Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, 29-year-old, died near Riga, Latvia on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, during Canada’s Operation Reassurance, the country’s largest overseas mission. The Canadian defence ministry said he had served almost three years in the CAF and was on his first overseas deployment. An investigation is underway; there is currently no indication the incident poses a heightened threat to squadron safety. Halmagean hailed from Hamilton, Ontario. Latvia hosts a multinational NATO battle brigade tasked with deterring Russian aggression, with Canada as the lead nation. In August, PM Mark Carney announced Operation Reassurance would extend for three more years to 2029.
