Canada's Democracy Holds Strong, Conservative Trust Falls

Environics Institute’s latest survey shows 70 % of Canadians report they are very or somewhat satisfied with how Canada’s democracy operates, a figure that has swung modestly from 70 % in 2010, up to 79 % in 2017, down to 65 % in 2023, then back to 70 % in 2025. Trust in key institutions remains broadly steady: 41 % say they have “a lot” of trust in elections, 47 % some, and 12 % low. By 2025, Conservative voters’ satisfaction fell sharply from 89 % in 2014 to 52 %, and confidence in elections dropped from 43 % in 2021 to 25 %. Liberal trust in Parliament rose from 17 % in 2010 to 42 % in 2025, whereas Conservative trust fell from 21 % to 13 %. Overall, Canada’s democracy appears stable, but partisan polarization threatens institutional confidence.
