Canada sets sights on first North American EV with Chinese tech

Canada plans to become the first North American country to produce electric vehicles using Chinese technology, aiming to secure joint ventures within the next three years. A senior, unnamed official confirmed that a deal concluded on Friday, Jan 16, 2026, allows Canada to import up to 49,000 Chinese EVs annually at a reduced 6.1% tariff, down from the 100% rate imposed in 2024. The agreement trades lower duties on Canadian canola, lobsters, crabs and peas for the tariff cut. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ambassador Kirsten Hillman notified U.S. Trade Rep Jamieson Greer; the U.S. reaction was neutral. Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized the deal as "terrible" for the auto sector.
