Canada Secures 49,000 Chinese EVs in Canola‑Duty Swap

On Jan 15 2026 Prime Minister‑who‑is‑in‑office Mark Carney announced a tariff‑quota settlement with China that lets up to 49,000 Chinese electric‑vehicle (EV) imports into Canada at a 6.1 % duty, while China is expected to cut canola‑seed duties to 15 % by March. Canadian canola, lobster, crab and pea exports will be duty‑free in China from March through year‑end. The deal resolves a multi‑year dispute that began after Canada imposed EV tariffs to protect its auto sector. Meeting took place in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, where President Xi Jinping said Beijing will work to restore ties. The agreement is seen as vital for Canada’s trade diversification amid U.S. tariff pressures.
