Canada Flags Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threats
Canada’s PM calls Trump’s Greenland tariff plan a risk to NATO

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney voiced concern on Jan 18, 2026, after US President Donald Trump announced 10 % tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland, with rates rising to 25 % on June 1 if Greenland remains unsold. Carney, speaking at a Doha press conference, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to NATO and the sovereignty of Greenland, urging that decisions rest with Denmark and Greenland. He emphasized that such tariff threats risk destabilizing trans‑Atlantic ties and could collapse the alliance. Canada also noted its plans for deeper defense cooperation with Qatar and pledged continued support for Arctic security amid escalating geopolitical tension.
