Canada-China EV & Canola Deal Details
Canada and China sign landmark trade deal to lift EV tariffs and lower canola duties, stirring industry reactions.

On Friday, 16 January 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed a landmark trade agreement in Beijing that will allow 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles to enter Canada at a reduced tariff of 6.1 firing after Ottawa imposed a 100% duty in July 2024. In return,_runtime China will cut Canadian canola duties to 15% by March 2026 and remove tariffs on canola meal, lobsters, crabs and peas from March until the end of 2026. Chinese tariffs on Canadian pork remain. The deal follows trade tensions that began after the 2024 EV tariff and the 2025 anti‑dumping investigation. Canadian farmers welcome the tariff relief while Ontario’s auto industry and Unifor union caution that the influx of state‑subsidised EVs could threaten jobs. U.S. President‑elect Trump signals support; the U.S. trade representative hints concerns.
