Calgary Water Usage Remains High Despite City's Conservation Appeal After Major Main Break

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas reported that city water usage remains in the unsustainable 'red zone' one day after a catastrophic water main break on January 1, 2026. The Bearspaw south feeder main failure dropped daily underground water storage from 600 million litres to 459 million litres. The city has requested residents reduce water use by taking 3-minute showers, limiting toilet flushes, and running dishwashers only when full, but has seen no measurable reduction. Officials aim to repair the pipe within two weeks and are accelerating the replacement of the aging feeder main with a steel pipe. An acoustic monitoring system detected only 18 wire snaps in two months leading to the break, compared to 20 snaps in July-August 2024. Parts of Montgomery, West Hillhurst, Parkdale and Point McKay remain under a boil water advisory. The city warns another break could occur as the 50-year-old pipe reaches the end of its reliable lifecycle.
