Calgary Lifts Water Restrictions, Vows Faster Pipe Replacement
December rupture ends Calgary restrictions; city pledges Bearspaw feeder swap in a year.

On December 2025 a rupture in Calgary’s Bearspaw south feeder main cut off the city’s water supply. Emergency crews patched the line, and restrictions were lifted on January 16, 2026. Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the job was a ‘moon shot’, insisting that the four‑year pipe replacement plan be done in 12 months. The repair required enough water to refill nine Olympic‑sized swimming pools. Alberta’s provincial review now demands full access to water‑system reports back to 2004. City contracts were awarded to Ward & Burke and Graham Construction to fast‑track steel‑pipe installation. While residents enjoy restored flow, officials warn that restrictions may return in spring and fall as the replacement effort proceeds.
