In late December 2025, 62‑year‑old Dr. Muhammad Zia‑Ur Rahman was arrested in Mauritius and extradited to Calgary after a two‑year search. The 5‑year‑old son was taken in 2023 when Rahman allegedly cut ties with the mother. Interpol alerts led to his capture at the Mauritius airport on Dec. 16, 2025. He now faces a child abduction charge and may face additional charges. The boy, now seven, was reunited with his mother and re‑registered in school. Court proceedings are scheduled for Wednesday, 22 January 2026.
