Burnham's MP Bid Blocked by Labour NEC, Starmer Resists
Labour's NEC blocks Burnham's bid for Gorton and Denton seat, citing cost and chaos.

Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, sought to return to Westminster by standing in the Gorton and Denton by‑election on 25 January 2026. He formally requested permission on Saturday 24 January, but Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) blocked the bid the following day. The 10‑person panel voted eight to one, with only deputy leader Lucy Powell in favour. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the NEC chair Shabana Mahmood and several union leaders cast abstentions or opposition, emphasizing concerns over the cost of a city‑wide mayoral vote amid upcoming local, Welsh and Scottish elections. Starmer’s move was portrayed as preventing a “psychodrama” that could split the party ahead of the May contests. Burnham announced he would remain focused on his mayoralty and offered support to the eventual Labour candidate, while criticizing the leadership’s handling of the decision.
