The British pound reached its highest level against the US dollar in 10 months on April 4, 2023, breaking above $1.25 for the first time since June 2022. The currency gained approximately 3.3% against the dollar since the start of 2023, making it the best-performing currency among developed economies this year. This recovery follows a record low near $1.03 in September 2022 after former Prime Minister Liz Truss's controversial budget plans triggered investor panic and market turmoil. The pound's rebound is driven by stronger-than-expected UK economic resilience, with GDP estimates showing 0.1% growth in Q4 2022 and a 0.3% rise in January 2023, alongside February inflation at 10.4%. Analysts expect the Bank of England to maintain aggressive rate hikes, while the dollar's weakness from 2022 peaks and global banking sector uncertainty also contributed to sterling's gains.
