Britain Launches ‘British FBI’ National Police Service

On 25 January 2026 the UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the creation of the National Police Service (NPS), a new national body that will act like a ‘British FBI’. The NPS will take over functions such as counter‑terrorism, fraud, organised crime, police helicopters and road policing, and will standardise training across the 43 local forces in England and Wales. It will roll out state‑of‑the‑art technology, including nationwide facial‑recognition software that has already helped London’s Metropolitan Police arrest over 1,700 suspects in two years. A national police commissioner will be appointed, and local forces will gain new public‑service targets for response times, victim satisfaction and trust.
