Britain invests £20m in DragonFire laser weapons to protect against drone attacks

The UK Ministry of Defence announced on 9 January 2026 that it is investing £20 million in the DragonFire laser weapon system. The programme aims to equip Royal Navy ships and other key installations with directed‑energy firepower to neutralise hostile drones and loitering munitions. DragonFire, developed by the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) arm, will be delivered to the fleet over the next three years. The weapons will complement existing counter‑air capabilities and provide a cost‑effective deterrent against low‑level UAV threats. The investment is part of a broader defense strategy to enhance electromagnetic and kinetic protection for vital infrastructure across Britain.
