Boeing warned of faulty bearing, crash kills 27
Boeing knew a defective part was a danger, yet the 2025 UPS MD‑11 crash at Louisville killed 27.

Boeing had warned airlines as early as 2011 that a bearing which secures an MD‑11 engine to the wing had failed four times on three different aircraft. On 4 Nov 2025, UPS Flight 2976 departed Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, Kentucky, stalled 30 ft after losing its left engine. The aircraft crashed on the runway, killing all three crew members and 12 people on the ground, for a total of 27 fatalities. The NTSB noted the bearing wasn’t required to be replaced by a mandatory airworthiness directive, and the last detailed inspection had been scheduled after about 7,000 more take‑offs and landings. The crash has grounded all MD‑11s and 10 DC‑10s fleet-wide.
